Chicco di Grano - via degli Zingari

Quattro formaggi and primavera pizza
Via degli Zingari 5-8, Rome, Italy
Take out tired pizza. Chicco di Grano is our go-to pizza when tired and can't be bothered cooking. It's not amazing but it is consistent, quick, relatively cheap, good and most importantly, really close to our house.

Quattro formaggi
Post rugby game (Italy vs Argentina) and super rainstorm pizza.
Basically you can never go wrong with a 4 cheese pizza, especially when it's cold and rainy outside. Unfortunately this one was a bit burned - not terrible but noticeable.

Prealpina - takeout
Great simple pizza. Gorgonzola, mozzarella and walnuts. Good moderately thick crust with good ingredients. They could use some practice spreading out the walnuts instead of dumping them in the middle though. Well cooked. Oh prealpina how I love you. Such a nice combination of good flavours. If only they knew how to spread ingredients around (and more gorgonzola never hurts).

A perfect place in a pinch. Although this place has a pretty poor trip advisory rating (one of the recent reviewers complained that there wasn't tomato sauce.... They will be frequently disappointed by about half the pizzas in Italy then since many are "white" or cheese based - and so so good), I actually still enjoy it.  The pizzas have a thick crust and aren't amazing but the location is great and they always have room. The service is pretty quick (although getting the bill is still equally long here as in other places), so its an old easy pick as it is the closest good pizzeria near our apartment.

This was the last meal the pizza family had before leaving for pizza-less Canada.

For our last night in Rome, we went to a place in Monti that John had been to a number of times before.  On his recommendation, I tried an interesting pizza that John describes as “a salad on a crust.”  It was essentially a pizza but without most of the binding agents such as cheese or thick sauce.  It ended up being delicious, having really nice fresh toppings like arugula and tomatoes and such and the focaccia like base was brilliant.  We met a nice French man and his son from the adjacent table and I was able to practice my French a touch.

"Try to look really excited" Da Chicco di Grano on Via degli Zingari, 6.  This place has become our "go-to" place in Monti as it is relatively cheap, good and has a great location near us.  It is huge so there is always space even if you can't sit outside.  I decided to increase the healthiness (or decrease the unhealthiness) of my pizza's recently and to branch out a little more so I tried this salad pizza on focaccia bread.  The problem with focaccia bread is that it is often brittle (see next post) so when you bite into the pizza everything falls off.  It is just too dry and thin.  It needs to be a little chewier. It was still quite enjoyable and you will notice the freshly squeezed orange juice next to my pizza attesting to my healthiness.  Overall it was good, nice fresh greens and buffalo mozzarella is just amazing all the time.

Chicco di grano extravaganza
3 pizza narnia night
7.5/10

Pizza wife trainee introduced us to this pizzeria as our first official dinner in Monti since moving.  It was in Piazza Della Madonna di Monti just a couple hundred metres from our new apartment.  The place has a wonderful atmosphere with many people hanging out by the public fountain all night eating and drinking.  Definitely a great first impression of Monti.  The pizza was very good and very thick with a lot of cheese, probably the most I've had in Rome so was nice and filling.  The cheese wasn't very varied though and afterwards we were all very thirsty so the pizza must have been quite salty.  I'm still planning on going back though as the menu has many options and it was very good.
