Bir and Fud

Bir and Fud is a fairly touristy place, but to be honest, that doesn't bother me at all.  It is busy but I expect good pizza places to be busy.  I've never had to wait that long and it is a nice enough place.  They have good food besides pizza - very good fries and something called vanilla ketchup - which seemed to just be ketchup but am not sure.  Also good bruschetta.  Their drinks menu is pretty lacking however.  They do have interesting craft beers that people seem to like, and to be fair, their name is Bir = beer and fud = food, but they don't have any other options other than tap water.  I do appreciate that they don't charge for the water which comes in a nice bottle and is just as good as bottled water.  But is is nice to have a coke or something else if you want something other than beer and water.  Great pizza's and the ceiling has foam on it so although it is a small place it doesn't get too loud.  Nice touch.

Trifolata.
Eggplant, basil, buffalo Mozzarella, and mushrooms.
I'm not a fan of eggplant at the best of times so take my review with a grain of salt but I don't like "googley" things like mushy eggplant.  So although the rest of the pizza was pretty amazing, the eggplant was a bit overpowering and the texture wasn't great.  A little less eggplant, and smaller pieces would have gone a long way.

hings were getting desperate as on Thursday my pizza wife had pizza without me and thus I knew my chances of convincing her to have more pizza on the weekend were very slim.  Fortunately I was able to hijack Friday night party plans to go to Bir and Fud (in Trastevere) as they have lots of beer, but more importantly they have pizza and I hadn't been there yet.  Luckily this worked and there was even lots of space and pretty quick service for our pizza.  I have heard mixed reviews of Bir and Fud, with some saying amazing and others saying terrible.  Maybe the quality varies but I was very happy to catch them on a very "on" night.  I had what I think was called a Trifolata pizza (or something similar) which again was excellent.  It was a very naples styled pizza with thick crust, basil, shredded very fresh buffalo mozzarella and (too much) eggplant.  It is currently in my top 5 pizzas in Rome category.  The flavours were great, it wasn't too salty, everything tasted fresh.  Only complaint was that there was a little too much eggplant.  Eggplant isn't one of my favourites as it can be very "googly" - too mushy with googly bits.  Zucchini can have that problem as well.  It could have been helped by having smaller chunks but otherwise it was excellent.  I highly recommend it.
